Getting Around Bali: Transport Options Compared

March 22, 2026 · Solmira Travel Team

Private driver, scooter, ride-hailing app, or taxi - how Bali's main transport options actually compare.

Bali doesn't have a public transport network built for tourists, so most visitors choose between a private driver, a rented scooter, ride-hailing apps, or metered taxis - each with real tradeoffs.

A private driver for the day is the most comfortable option for exploring beyond one area - no navigating unfamiliar roads yourself, and the route can adjust as you go if you want to add an extra stop.

Scooters are the fastest way to get around short distances and are genuinely popular with visitors, but Bali's traffic and road conditions are demanding for anyone without real riding experience - an international driving permit and a helmet are non-negotiable.

Ride-hailing apps work well within cities like Denpasar, Seminyak, or Ubud, though some tourist areas restrict app-based pickups, so it's worth checking local pickup rules before you rely on one for a full day.

For anything involving multiple stops, a full day out of town, or an early-morning start like a volcano trek, a private driver typically ends up simpler and not much more expensive than piecing together several shorter rides.
